Ernie Pyle won a Pulitzer Prize for his stories about ordinary “dogface” American infantry soldiers during World War II. This style was honed from 1935 through 1941 when he wrote human interest columns for the Scripps-Howard newspaper syndicate. His simple accounts of regular people across North America were written in a distinctive, folksy style.

Ernie Pyle was born on August 3, 1900 in Dana, Indiana and was killed by enemy fire on Iwo Jima during the Battle of Okinawa on April 18, 1945.
